If you are facing complex faculty-related concerns such as performance issues, misconduct, or policy violations, you should contact the Office of Faculty Relations to discuss the best plan of action. This office collaborates with deans, department chairs, and academic leaders across the University and School of Medicine to support a compliant and respectful academic environment, while also advising faculty members on available resources and processes.
If you think something is inappropriate, or you need advice on an issue involving a faculty member, please consult the Director of Faculty Relations before you impose any disciplinary actions or sanctions.
Office of Institutional Equity (OIE)

If you have concerns related to inclusion, affirmative action, employment equity, harassment prevention, what it means to be a responsible reporter or other work-related equity issues, contact the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE), which serves the Duke community in these areas.
Faculty Members along with other University staff members are considered responsible employees.

If you are seeking support for faculty development or leadership growth, you can engage with this office who offers faculty and leadership development programs. They partner with Duke schools, departments, and academic units to foster faculty success, support recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty, and promote a welcoming academic culture rooted in Duke’s core values of respect, trust, inclusion, discovery, and excellence.
Office of the Ombuds
If you are experiencing a conflict or concern and need a confidential, impartial resource, you can contact the Office of the Ombuds. They support all faculty, staff, and students by listening, offering guidance, and helping to identify solutions that promote a respectful and productive work and learning environment.

Personal Assistance Services (PAS)

If you need support related to disability accommodations or accessibility in the workplace or learning environment, you should contact Duke Access and Accommodation Services. They provide leadership in ensuring an accessible and inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities and serve as a central resource for disability-related information, procedures, and services, while ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.

This office provides confidential, no-cost services to faculty and staff and do not share personal health information or bill insurance providers.
- No reporting to leadership/management
- Clinical assessment, referrals and follow-up
- Close working relationship with Duke Psychiatry to provide urgent access
- Coaching
- Counseling
- Faculty members may be sent to EOHW for a fitness for duty evaluation. Faculty leaders should reach out directly to EOHW after completing the Fitness for Duty and Impairment Checklist. Employee Occupational Health Clinics | Human Resources In order to request at Mandatory Fitness for Duty Assessment, the faculty member must demonstrate a safety risk to their job, co-workers of the individual.
- Provide documentation of safety concern/impairment to EOHW as soon as possible and prior to evaluation; Fitness for Duty and Impairment Checklist*
- Unexpected, persistent poor performance
- Alcohol on breath: address it now, do not wait
- Unusual actions
- Severe mood swings
- Missing meds: do not wait; consult EOHW now
- Can not physically do the job
- Repeated inappropriate behavior with faculty, staff, colleagues, patients

If you have a faculty member dealing with personal, work, or family challenges, you can contact Personal Assistance Services (PAS), Duke’s faculty and employee assistance program. Licensed professionals provide confidential assessments, short-term counseling, and referrals at no cost to Duke faculty, staff, and their immediate family members.
